The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
