The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
