Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
